Juniper exclusively grows in dry and rocky conditions but is relatively easy to identify when foraging in those areas. Juniper has been used for hundreds of years in culinary and medical practises. Juniper berries are used to make gin, the popular and deliciously aromatic alcoholic spirit.

The powerful smell of juniper is slightly citrusy, with the flavour resembling pine wood and a hint of spice.  The berries are sometimes covered in a powdery, white substance which is actually wild yeast!

Foraged juniper berries can be used in meat dishes, especially when cooking with game such as venison. The berry also pairs well with aromatic herbs such as parsley, fennel and garlic. Juniper berry branches can also be used to infuse alcoholic liquids or oils at home.
